Hey everyone, hope you are keeping well it’s been a while. In today’s post I am going to tell you about my hair journey. Where I’m at and how far I have come. Curly hair can be difficult if you do not know how to treat it. The purpose of today's post is to share my hair journey with you and I hope this encourages or inspires others to embrace their natural hair and look after or know how they can look after it. I will do a separate post on what curly hair care to give you more insight.
It can be a lot of time and effort to work with mixed hair. It requires a lot of care and product to keep it healthy. I’d say when I was younger I was not as educated on my type of hair how to work with it and what to put in it either. Growing up my mum did my hair until I reached the end or primary beginning of secondary school where I would say my hair became a nightmare for me.
Coming through my hair was like combing through a wasps nest and it felt like I would be combing out half of my hair every time I did it. I became lazy and just simply did not know what to do with my hair. How to care for it. What to use. How to use it. My hair became a big frizzy mess and then eventually started becoming flat. I got frustrated with that I could not understand as to why my hair was that way and through the easiest option would be to relax my hair.
So I relaxed my hair for my birthday wanted a change. If you know me personally you know I like to change it up once in a while. Staying the same is boring to me. My hair was healthy for a while but after awhile the relaxer became damaging to my hair. I had also dyed my hair red and Straightened my hair frequently which was also damaging. My hair became very thin loads with of split ends.i just wanted to give up with it at that point.
For my 18th birthday I decided I was going to switch my look up. I decided to cut my hair short. I wanted a change and I thought that would give my hair the breather if needed to grow again and be healthy. I had my hair short for a little over a year. If you have hair like mine that grows within every 2 weeks or so cutting your hair isn’t cost effective lol! It was costing me a bomb and I missed my natural curly hair. I decided I would grow it out and start my transition of getting my healthy curly hair back.
I did a lot of research into products that you can use for curly hair and how to treat and look after curly hair and I came across a brand called Shea Moisture. I have to say their products are amazing. They have a wide variety of different products throughout their line. I used their coconut and hibiscus line to start off with and my hair was so healthy and it was growing so fast it was unbelievable.
I do a hair mask twice a week with Shea Moisture’s raw Shea butter hair treatment mask and their 10 in 1 multi benefit mask. I also wash my hair twice a week With the coconut and hibiscus shampoo and conditioner and sometimes I use the Jamaican castor oil shampoo with it.
I style my hair daily with their Jamaican castor oil leave in conditioner and their coconut and hibiscus curl enhancing smoothie or their curl and style milk. I’m finding that these products are helping my hair growth a lot and are helping me maintain my hair's health. My hair is thicker, stronger and much healthier overall. It also smells amazing.
My hair mask Recipe
2 Tablespoons of the Raw shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque
2 Tablespoons of the 10 in one Multi Benefit Hair Masque
10 Drops of either lavender or peppermint essential oil
10 squirts of the body shop strawberry beautifying oil
I also changed some other stuff like my pillow cases. I use satin or silk pillow cases. I use a scalp massager to help the follicles in my hair. I used lavender or peppermint essential oils in my hair also which are very good for your hair. All of which I was never doing before and have seen so much improvements.
My hair is so much more healthier and has grown a lot since 2015. When I made the decision to grow it out. I have a long way to go yet for my hair to return back to how it was as you can see from the picture above when i was much younger my hair was thicker and the curls were more defined and tight. I am pleased with results so far and can not wait to show you my results when my hair continues to grow and get thicker and more defined. I do find some straight strands of hair here and there but I trim my hair and trim our any of the straight hairs to ensure my hair grows back curly and healthier.
